True Grit’s a Hit!

Last week I went to a free Times+ preview of True Grit, the new Coen brothers film, which I believe is up for a few Oscars. It’s a Western based on a book written in the 60s, which was later made into a film starring John Wayne. Jeff Bridges is brilliant, as always, as the drunken, one eyed Marshall and Matt Damon is also impressive as a cocky Texas Ranger, which is a bit of a different role for him. The young female lead, Hailee Stanfield, also does really well as I was worried at the outset that she might be a bit irritating – but not so. The story is engaging and exciting and it’s really nice to see how the relationship between the three main characters develops during the film. Highly recommended!
