Schools commemorate Docklands life in 2011 with time capsules

23 November 2011 As London’s Docklands prepares for the world’s gaze in 2012, Docklands Light Railway (DLR) teamed up with three local schools to bury time capsules commemorating life in their community.

The time capsules were donated by DLR to participating schools and included items from both DLR and Museum of London Docklands. Cubitt Town Junior School, St Paul With St Luke C Of E Primary School and Keir Hardie Primary School buried the capsules in their playgrounds on Thursday 17th November.

Pupils were asked to fill the time capsules with objects that captured life in the Docklands today and would help a child in 2050 understand how they lived in 2011. They responded with paintings, poems and stories recording their daily school routine, feelings about the 2012 Olympics and weekends living on the Isle of Dogs.

The children also designed artwork imagining what life would be like in the future and included paintings of robots, flying cars and trains and themselves in futuristic clothing.

The time capsule ceremonies were the latest events in the DLR’s ‘Real History’ project which aims to help commuters, locals and visitors delve deeper into the history of the Docklands. Earlier this autumn DLR collaborated with Museum of London Docklands to launch a guide, microsite and social media campaign providing information on historical facts and locations to visit in the area.

Simon Dobson, DLR Senior Marketing Manager and Sandy Shing, DLR Marketing Officer Growth attended the burials and Simon Dobson says: “We were overwhelmed by the children’s enthusiasm for the project and delighted by the colourful and imaginative artwork, stories and poems that they have produced for the time capsules.”

”With the Olympics fast approaching this an important time for local communities to reflect on how quickly the Docklands has changed during the years to now be host to one of the world’s greatest sporting events.”

The time capsules buried by the school children will be recovered by future students in 2050.

I work for a company (Flagship’s US partner, Peppercom) that is known as much for its hard work as it is for its hard play. • Snap to it with Instagram

Suddenly, everyone’s a photographer.  Retro inspired shots of door handles and street scenes litter my twitter, and Facebook’s just a mélange of sepia snaps.  Instagram fever is sweeping the nation, as users take and share photos with their smart phone, using filters to add vintage effects. Originally exclusive to iPhone users, the Android app launched

Only three years ago the hash sign suffered a meagre existence.  Its purpose unknown to the upcoming generations, hash’s humble façade was seen only as part of an emoticon or on a sheet of music. • Conversation – a dying art?

Recently I have been prompted to reflect on the meaning of ‘conversation’ in this digital world, when everyone seems glued to their smart phones and tablets. An example is a recent ‘conversation’ (yes, we did converse face-to-face) with my daughter where I asked if she had spoken to a friend; she responded saying yes, they
