Case Studies

Sumitomo Chemical Co Ltd

Sumitomo Chemical Co Ltd: Flagship works with Sumitomo Chemical Co. Ltd to raise awareness of its life-saving Olyset® mosquito bed net and the role it plays in combating malaria. Aside from UK and international media public relations, the programme involves event management, behaviour–change communication activities and liaison with government and parliamentary bodies.

Over the past five years, our successes have included: prompting Jon Snow to do a 30-minute Channel 4 programme focusing on Sumitomo’s anti-malaria activities in East Africa; organising the opening of the Olyset bed-net factory in Tanzania (attended by international representatives of governments, world health bodies, NGOs and media); collaboration with the UK’s leading malaria NGOs; getting an Olyset net on the door of Number 10 Downing St; and providing the world’s largest ‘mosquito’ net for Malaria No More’s Ambassadors, David Beckham and Andy Murray, to play tennis over in order to launch the charity and highlight the problem of malaria.

Flagship has managed the sponsorship of events such as a photo-exhibition with The Malaria Consortium and the launch of global health reports to highlight World Malaria Day. More recently, our work has included running an event at The Royal Commonwealth Society to launch Sumitomo’s World Cup PSAs, in which African footballers encouraged people to value and use their malaria net.

Pressure Chamber

  • Blame storming- is it getting worse?

This morning, as my Twitter, Facebook and news feeds sprang onto my screens, it was clear that Tesco was in the middle of a media storm. Its advertisement for ‘unpaid’ nightshift workers had seemingly provoked fury and outrage resulting in the social networks working themselves into a frenzy of hostility. What was interesting was that

  • What to do if you hit the Jackpot

In recent weeks there have been two substantial EuroMillions wins in the UK.  Interestingly, both decided to announce their winning publicly, leading them into the ensuing media storm. And so, we see the same story cropping up in the media – is it wise for winners to come out publicly, or should they keep the

  • Midsized agencies – way to go!!

A couple of weeks ago London’s Evening Standard ran an article  saying that tougher times were ahead for PR firms ‘stuck in the middle’. In essence, the newspaper was saying that the only way ahead for PR consultancies was either to be a global conglomerate or a niche player – scale versus supposed agility, and

  • Is the media simply collecting tokens?

Recently a former Radio 4 controller called for more ethnic minority representation on flagship programmes ‘Today’ and ‘The Archers’ which came weeks after the decision by Neighbours to move its first Asian family into Ramsay Street. This should be applauded as a proactive step to increase visibility of minority ethnic groups within the media, so
